Rockets & Secret Weapons
The A4, known as the V2 (Vergeltungswaffe 2, or "retaliation weapon 2"), was the first ballistic missile in history to be used as a weapon during the Second World War. With over 3,000 launches against targets in England, Belgium and the Netherlands, it became a symbol of German terror against the civilian population.
The V2's engine was an engineering marvel of its time – a high-performance unit producing 25 tonnes of thrust, powered by ethanol and liquid oxygen. Histovia Film explains the complex interplay of its components using a surviving original example.
The reel offers a technical insight into how the V2 engine worked and highlights how, after the war, this technology laid the foundation for the American and Soviet space programmes.
