Anti-tank Barrier on the Rhine – The Secret Bridge Barrier of 1936

As early as 1936, Switzerland began building secret anti-tank barriers and bridge barriers along the Rhine. These installations were designed to be activated immediately in the event of a German attack and to halt armoured troops.

Histovia Film documented the still-surviving remains of these secret defensive installations. Many of these barriers remain little researched to this day and are unknown to the wider public.

The reel shows concrete surviving anti-tank barriers, explains their construction, and examines the role the Rhine Line played in the Swiss defence concept – and why Switzerland, despite its official neutrality, was intensively preparing for war.
